The Story of Cosmo
Cosmo is the result of a worldwide collaboration of eight teddy bear artists known as the Secret Sisters. Cosmo has a bit of New Zealand, Sweden, Canada, Singapore, Australia, South Africa, the United States and England in him. His mothers have asked me to coordinate this effort, which began in the Fall of 1998. Cosmo has traveled over 20,000 miles. His destiny is noble - for Cosmo was designed and made for the Libearty Auction.
The Libearty Campaign is championed by the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA). WSPA donates monies raised in the auction to fight against the mistreatment of bears. For example, in China, bears are kept in small cages, with a tube inserted into their gallbladder to be "milked" for bile, a supposed cure for human ailments. And in Pakistan, the practice of "bear baiting" is a sport where bears are tied to a stake so pit bull terriers may attack them. These visions are horrifying to us, but for the bears it is worse. They needlessly live and die in agonizing pain - for the bemusement of their captors.
The Libearty Auction will be held this year at Alexandria Palace ("Ally Pally"), in November 1999. Many other bears will also be donated to this wonderful cause. We hope Cosmo's auction will make a worthy contribution.
